Global drug development: Asia’s role and contribution

11-12th October 2006, Tokyo, Japan

The pharmaceutical market in the Asia‑Pacific region (excluding Japan) currently accounts for less than 20% of the global market, but it is the fastest‑growing region in the world, with a compound annual growth rate of 11.4% compared with a global rate of 7.9%. By 2015, the Asia‑Pacific pharmaceutical market was projected to rise from USD 41 billion to USD 121 billion, becoming approximately half the size of the European market.

Against this background, the Institute for Regulatory Science returned to Tokyo in October 2006 for its second Workshop on Global Drug Development (GDD), focusing specifically on Asia’s role and contribution. The first Tokyo workshop, held in May 2004, examined GDD from the perspective of the ICH‑affiliated regions, whereas this meeting addressed the extension of global clinical development programmes into the wider Asia‑Pacific region and the response of local regulatory agencies to this challenge.

The Workshop attracted record participation, with over sixty delegates. Despite the expanded size, productive and interactive discussions were achieved through four Syndicate groups, which met towards the end of the meeting.
